After our breakfast of eggs, bread and... rice and beans(!) we traveled to the Lake Arena and kayaked in the freshwater for a few hours. Right before our float, we saw howler monkeys and then during our venture we heard them howling!
We hiked through a rainforest, and guess what... IT RAINED! It's actually the rainy season right now so it rains for an hour or so every day. Luckily the rain fell while we were hiking 483 stone steps through the rainforest to La Fortuna Waterfall. While we wouldn't let the students swim near, around, or behind the waterfall, we swam in the river (it was raining anyway, why not?).
The hot springs weren't what any of us expected, but with 16 different pools of water ranging from PA pool temps to 152 degrees Fahrenheit we definitely had a different experience. In some pools we swam, in some pools we floated, and in some pools we screamed as we pulled our poor little toes out of the water (although some boys chose to run through the boiling liquid).
It was a good day! We're tired! This little town (La Fortuna) has the BEST ice cream-cactus fruit and coffee are our two top picks... next to rice and bean flavor :)
